UJALA is a Government of India initiative to distribute LED light bulbs at lower rates. The scheme was originally launched in January, 2015 as ‘National programme for LED based home and street lighting‘. The aim was to replace incandescent bulbs with energy efficient LED lamps for residential and street lighting in India. Later the scheme was renamed as ‘Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs for All (UJALA)'.
Assam Hydrocarbon and Energy Company Limited in association with Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), a PSU under Govt. of India, took initiatives to promote the use of LED bulbs, Energy Efficient Tube Lights and Energy Efficient Fans. AHECL have distributed 4,00,000 (Four Lakhs) LED bulbs across the State with the help of Aamar Dukans, Fair Price Shops, GPSS etc. of Department of Food & Civil Supplies, Govt. of Assam. The LED bulbs are being distributed under UJALA (Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs for All) scheme or the LED bulb programme of Govt. of India.
